The Pennington School Summer Academy
Academic preparation, and courses for life—helping Middle School and Upper School students achieve individual excellence and get set for success.
Join us for a two-week virtual program, during the weeks of July 27 and August 3, focusing on executive function skills and core academics!
Summer Academy is an a la carte program, where you sign up for the course or courses to best help you succeed in the next academic school year and beyond.
The morning course (9:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.) will consist of Study Skills, focusing on the executive function skills that ensure your child has the tools to succeed in and outside of any classroom.
The afternoon courses (1:00 - 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.) will focus on academic skills specific to disciplines such as mathematics, science, history, or English. Each course runs for 60 minutes and includes work to be done outside of class. Keep academic skills sharp with any of our subject-specific programs.
Students may choose to enroll in both morning and afternoon sessions, only the morning session, or only the afternoon session.

Harnessing the Power of English: Individual Coaching for Mastery*
*Specifically designed for bilingual and first-generation English speakers!
Is English your child’s second language or is your child a first-generation speaker of English? Given the current circumstances, have your child’s opportunities for speaking English been limited? This course is perfect for such children, even if their use of English is excellent. Their words still may fail to inspire and persuade, and sometimes they may be misunderstood. Correct grammar and mechanics are not enough to harness the beauty and power of English!
Students will learn how to go beyond the rules of English, discovering how to use the language in a way that is nuanced, precise, and targeted. They will find out how to create shades of meaning and use association and connotation to appeal to specific audiences. A new confidence will come from knowing that when they write or speak, people will hear the clarity and authority in their voice.
In this course, each student will work one-on-one with Jill Brown, an expert coach and experienced teacher of English who has also served as a professional writer and editor. They will meet four or five times each week via virtual platforms such as Zoom and will also work on short writing or speaking assignments each day. The assignments will be tailored to the student’s unique learning needs and language goals.
This course will be especially helpful to speakers who have used English less frequently as a result of COVID-19, social distancing, and remote learning.
